The Unit for Cooperation with Non-governmental Organizations was established in November 2004 under the Sector for Policy Analysis and Coordination within the General Secretariat of the Government of the Republic of Macedonia.

Its establishment means defining clear Government’s policy for development and continuous cooperation with the civil society, as well as creating conditions for policy implementation.

The Unit will enable promotion of the cooperation and establish partnership between the Government and the civil sector, as well as stronger inter-institutional cooperation. Through the Unit, the Government will make the administration able to recognize the role of the civil society sector and develop partnership with the sector itself.

By establishment of the Unit for Cooperation with Non-governmental Organizations, the Government promoted the aim for closer cooperation with the civil society sector and encouraged active involvement of civil society organizations in the process of policy creating.

The main aim of the Unit for Cooperation with Non-governmental Organizations is to gain credibility and develop institutional cooperation between the Government and civil society organizations, which will contribute to the development of the civil society sector. This is expected to result into new frame of the modern civil society in Macedonia and simultaneously stimulate democratization and modernization in all the segments of the society.
The Unit is permanent and coordinative body which represents a system for good cooperation between the Government and civil society sector.

The Unit has created a Strategy for Cooperation between the Government and the civil society sector. Its implementation has been coordinated by the Unit itself. The aim of the Strategy is to raise the awareness and enhance the practices for establishing partnership between the Government and the civil society sector as well as transparency in the process of policy creating.

The competence of the Unit will be conducted on the basis of the following principles: mutual trust; partnership; transparency; independency; responsibility.
